SHINE THE LIGHT

FRIDAY - DAY 5

WHO DO YOU SAY I AM? PART FIVE

Rounding out our week-long journey exploring what has been REVEALED to us about WHO JESUS IS, we finish by spending some time unpacking what Jesus refers to in Mark 8:31 about His impending death and resurrection. Here Jesus is fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies about Him being the SUFFERING SERVANT.

JESUS is the SUFFERING SERVANT

READ Isaiah 53:1-6

Isaiah 53, written more than 600 years before Jesus was born, unfolds the prophetic narrative of Jesus as the Suffering Servant, foreshadowing His sacrificial journey towards the Cross in the outworking of God’s plan of redemption and deliverance for humanity. But “deliverers” are usually dominating and forceful, who by their personal magnetism draw people to themselves and convince them to buy into their mission or agenda. If any should refuse to follow said “deliverer”, they will find themselves crushed or tossed aside – Jesus does not fit this picture at all. He entered the world as a baby, not a king…was born in a stable, not a palace.

Yet, to spend time in these first six verses of Isaiah, and being on this side of the Cross – we can see it clearly…Jesus is the Suffering Servant Isaiah spoke of.

Now READ Philippians 2:5-11

  • What similarities can you identify between the Isaiah and Philippians passage?

How could meditating more on Isaiah 53 help strengthen your faith in Christ? How might it shape your answer to Jesus’ question: WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?
